Catastrophe to Capsule

I can’t say enough about my husband of almost 9 years. He’s an amazing dad, husband, charming and stylish. It sounds crazy but when I first saw him I dissected his whole outfit and he was impeccably dressed. He’s always been the type of guy to stay on trend yet true to his own individual style. He sounds perfect right? and he almost is except when it comes to his closet and keeping it organized. Torey is an absolute slob (yeah I said it) when it comes to keeping his clothes hung, folded and carefully put away. I know that was harsh but let's be real most men are not tidy and its no surprise that he lacks in this area . I continuously have to get him on board with living a more organized life in terms of his closet and wardrobe. Some of you already know that I created a Facebook closet to sell and give away clothing, shoes and handbags the were no longer my style, didn’t fit, or items I kept around for mere memory purposes. It took me almost two years (crazy right ?) to get rid of clothes, shoes, jewelry etc and get my wardrobe down to items that I LOVED, that fit, and I could see myself wearing.

While on quarantine, I challenged my husband to create a capsule wardrobe; a wardrobe that was simple, timeless, and also reflected his current and hopefully future style profile. The term “capsule wardrobe” was coined by Susie Faux and was a wardrobe which consisted of interchangeable essential items. Usually a capsule wardrobe consists of 25 to 50 pieces of clothing which includes clothing, shoes and accessories.

Creating a capsule wardrobe for my husband was a challenge as he dresses business casual most days wearing a tie, dress shoes, tie bars etc but in contrast he dresses down when conducting business as a General Contractor. His wardrobe had to serve both aspects of his life all while reducing the amount of “stuff”. We started by renting a storage unit, my husband and I both have sneakers that we love but wouldn’t wear, you know those retro Jordan’s, Lebrons, Barkleys etc. we adore them but we left the sneaker head life back in our 20s. We decided we would use storage for sneakers and any clothing designated for holidays (i.e. those ugly Christmas sweaters we all love). Once we went through these items we went through clothes that didn’t fit and put them in a donation pile, clothes that were ripped or worn down we threw away and clothes that were in great condition but just not his style we decided to give to a couple friends that are about Torey’s size. We got Torey’s wardrobe down to 55 pieces of clothing and 22 pairs of shoes. Now a true capsule wardrobe is somewhat smaller but I’m pretty amazed at the progress we made. We both felt accomplished and decided to go even further by adding a wardrobe system to his closet, for this we used the Allen and Roth wood closet kit from Lowes in the color Java. My husband really loved this part, he loved having a place for his watches, ties, tie bars, socks and all his clothes carefully placed and organized. I think I’m slowly transforming him into a homebody and I love it! Im even a little jealous at this point because his closet is better organized than mine. Check out the finished product of his closet and let me know what you think!
