In 2019, the popular trend in home design seemed to be grey everything. Grey walls, cabinets, and tile in every shade imaginable seemed to pop up everywhere. I have used my share of grey in our home and it still hasn't lost its flare for me. The year 2020 comes with a host of new trends that are sure to excite the world of Interior Decorators and Interior Designers alike. I chose to highlight five trends that I have used and will continue to use in 2020.
Navy- a bold yet soothing color navy has been used for paint, furniture and cabinets. I've used it continuously in my home to add dimension and make a statement. Navy, by far has become one of the most popular colors to use with decor accents and paint color there's a reason why a shade of navy was Pantone's 2020 color of the year.
Refaced cabinets- this is a popular cost effective way to give your kitchen a "face lift". It adds dimension to any kitchen and serves as a modern update. Refacing cabinets starts as low as $1000 and can cost as much as $3000 for a 10 ft by 12 ft kitchen. If you're cabinets are in good structural condition then refacing is a great affordable option and only involves replacing the doors and drawer fronts and applying new veneer. You can pay a professional like Black Hammer Contracting (shameless plug) or try out your skills as a DIYer either way its a win win for you and your kitchen.
Mixing tiles- I really love going into my local hardware store and browsing the tile selections. Wall/floor tiles are a huge trend and of course made my list of overlooked home trends. One rule I like to stick by is varying the shape/pattern but not color of the tile you select to use in your home. So say you opt for a cool herringbone pattern in grey tile to place on your walls adding an octagon shaped tile in the same shade to your floor will create dimension but also maintain consistency. Using a patterned tile as flooring with a stark white subway tile on alls is also a great design method. Tiling is a great way to personalize your home and make bold statements. Its a must-try trend.
Wood- Ahhhhhh I can't say enough about my obsession with wood materials. The wood shelves in our reading room are always the topic of conversation anytime we have a guest. Wood adds a "wow" factor more than any other material used in home design. Its classic, timeless and adds character especially when you have a new construction home. Wood can be used in any type of home design aesthetic from farmhouse, mid-century modern, minimalist shabby chic the list goes on. I think most people shy away from wood accents or furniture for fear that it might make their space seem dated but I encourage all of you homebodies to incorporate it in your home space it makes quite a statement.
Floral Wallpaper- now I know this isn't one you were expecting from me the minimalist. I love florals, I add fresh flowers in 5 different spaces in my home on a weekly basis. Flowers are beautiful, lively and promote happiness. Floral wall paper in a small bedroom or bathroom is so beautiful. I know I know you're still thinking of your grandma's house and the thought of floral walls might make you cringe, but floral wallpaper in a big print with metallic finishes will really personalize your home and gives a Sex and the City vibe. Honestly, there are times when I wish there were all women in my home so I could put some floral wall paper up but hey my husband is out numbered by 3 women so I might just do it anyway.
I have all these style aesthetics in my home one way or the other except the floral wallpaper. My husband let's me go wild but I am sure he would stop me there.
